Assistant Controller

Job #4981 – Our client is considered an industry leader within the Ottawa construction sector, and they are now seeking an Assistant Controller for a full-time, permanent role. Reporting to an experienced Controller, the ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of accounting principles along with sharp analytical skills. You will support day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting requirements, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders. In addition, the selected incumbent will lead key activities such as audit preparation, regulatory filings, GL maintenance, account reconciliation, financial analysis, and job costing, while adhering to company policies. Main responsibilities include:

  • Prepare financial statements, analysis, and related project/job costing reports
  • Coordinate audits and collaborate with external auditors to ensure timely, accurate completion
  • Maintain the general ledger, post journal entries, and reconcile accounts monthly
  • Oversee account and intercompany reconciliations, resolving discrepancies promptly
  • Prepare bank compliance reports and other required submissions
  • Suggest improvements to accounting processes for efficiency and accuracy
  • Maintain accounting master data in the ERP system
  • Ensure compliance with legal guidelines, accounting frameworks, and company policies
  • Stay updated on accounting regulations and advise management on compliance matters

Qualifications:

The main qualifications for this role include:

  • Post-secondary education in finance and/or accounting is required
  • Completed CPA designation or in progress is preferred
  • Minimum 5+ years of progressive full-cycle accounting experience
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and procedures
  • Previous construction industry experience is considered a strong asset
  • Proficient in Excel
